Nearby places such as Standish, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Leigh can fall under a different council, so check with the council for your own address. Our summary of what the linked official page says: The page says parts of the borough sit within a smoke control area and links to a map to check whether a property is in one. Official guidance is published by GOV.UK: Smoke control area rules.

In England, a smoke control area limits you to authorised fuels in an ordinary open fire unless your appliance is exempt, and GOV.UK sets out the rules. We name the rules here but cannot tell you what they require at your address, so check the official sources linked on this page.
